[ It had been a long, difficult battle. Joking with Clint aside, it had easily been one of the most intense firefights Nate had ever been in. And not simply because of the alien factor (although that hadn't helped at all). It was the sheer number being thrown at them, spread out over a city and trying to save the residents in it. Nate had been too engrossed in the battle to be overwhelmed. Though exhaustion had tried to set in a few times.
By the end, he could barely move after sitting down at the shawarma place Stark had led them to. The food helped. A lot. They were still roughed up and dirty. Nate still had dried blood on his face but it didn't matter. The food was good and they had more or less saved the city.
He waits until the others are talking amongst themselves to look over at Bruce and says, ]
You did good today. Really good.
[ Incredible, even. But he knows Banner isn't really one for compliments. ]
[ The Hulk was tireless. That was probably the best thing about transforming and having him fight with the others, was that he didn't have moments where he just couldn't keep up or felt overwhelmed. If anything, the way the aliens kept coming at him only made him angrier, stronger, faster.
But that also meant that once all was said and done, and Bruce went back to being his small, usual self, he could barely stand on his own two legs without feeling his knees give in beneath the weight.
So, it's a good thing that he doesn't have to stand. His weight is heavily set on the chair, taking him already a good amount of effort to manage keeping his head upright, or lifting the food up to his mouth. But he's more starving than he is exhausted, and he devours the pieces of meat and the chips like he hasn't eaten anything in days.
He's glad to keep himself out of the conversations, though at first everyone's quiet, too tired to focus on anything other than the food. When the talking begins, Bruce keeps to the sidelines, his teammates' voices a distant background noise until one of them addresses him directly.
His eyes lift from his food, focusing on Nate's face. His smile is weak and small, as he nods his head minutely. ]
Thanks. [ He's right, Bruce really isn't one for compliments. He never knows what to say to them, either. ] You too.
[ The corner of his mouth quirks at that, always feeling he could do better in situations that called for more speed but that was in the past now. He takes another bite of his food, giving a nod.
After he swallows, ]
I don't know about you but I'm pretty sure I could sleep for a week after this.
[ They all could do better. But then that's why they're working as a team, instead of fighting alone. One way or the other, they complement each other when it comes to a fight.
Hopefully, when it comes to other things too. Still early to tell right now.
He huffs quietly and nods at Nate's remark, chewing and swallowing before he answers. ]
Oh, I'm definitely planning to sleep for a week. In case I go radio silent, you know why.
[ Mouthing a few more fries, he tips his head in a kind of nod, half-shrug to match it. Fair enough. ]
Do you think they'll even let us rest? [ A vague kind of 'they', as he glances over his shoulder, looking towards the street. ] We did kind of... destroy half the city.
[ In the process of stopping an invading alien army, sure. But still. ]
[ Because asking the Hulk to do clean up? Hahaha. ]
Fury will probably catch shit about it if he hasn't already but for now, we've saved the city and the world.
[ Nate doesn't sound particularly proud of it because he knows they failed to keep the city completely safe. But it's one of those moments he needs to keep telling himself that this is still a victory despite the damage done. ]
[ Well at least he could carry a lot of debris in one go. The only problem is he'd likely wreck as much as he'd clean up by simply walking down the street. ]
Good. I mean, I'm sorry for Fury. [ No he's not, not really. It's his job, and he knew very well what he was getting himself into when he called them all in. ] But maybe that'll be enough to give us a few days of peace and quiet.

That response will get more of a smirk from Nate, ]
Pretty sure I'll be just as silent on my end, too. But thanks for the notice.
