Mary rolled off of him a bit so that she could look him in the eye, even though hers were still wet with tears.
"What would you have me do then? Do you want me to leave you now? To drop me in the next port or send me back to my father? If you don't think there is hope for us, then should we even persist?"
It wasn't what she wanted. In her heart, despite everything and all of the odds against them, she wanted him and she wanted to stay. His death, when it happened, would be heartbreaking, and she would have to do her best to accept it when it came. Mary had never felt so happy or so free in her life. It would be equally devastating to give it up and go back to being a proper, but very bored, lady.
