"You'd have to, Mary. I would do whatever it took to not let them do the same to you."

Death, he could face. But he couldn't face the possibility of being the cause for her own death, too. If he had to take the blame and say he had kidnapped and abused her all this while, then he would. So long as it kept her safe— even if miserable. At least she would be alive, and eventually she would get over it. And get over him.

"That won't stop them from killing me. Even if they're proven what kind of person I am, even if they learned that the illegal things I did wouldn't warrant a death sentence, they'd still do it. If nothing else then to make an example out of me." Jim was convinced of that much.
