It would catch up to them, eventually. They could live in the present only for so long, after all, and maybe it was for the best they were facing reality now rather than later, when they were abruptly pulled back and confronted by all the things they so hoped to ignore. Maybe it would be easier to work through it all like this.

Except Jim only felt more helpless now. Or maybe he was just more aware of how helpless he really was, how he had no idea what to do.

"It may very well happen." He couldn't lie to her about that. He played it off and dismissed it all too often, spoke easily about being invincible and free, but he couldn't tell her that she wasn't right to be afraid. It was an all too real possibility that he may be caught, and in that case, he would almost certainly hang.
