Mary was trying to find something to grab onto, something to steady her, but the wind was so strong that it batted her away from any of the holds. At the sound of Jim's voice, she looked up, seeing a flash of his face in the lightning. She tried to scramble towards him through the blinding rain. "Jim," she called, "I want-"

Her sentence got cut off as the ship pitched sharply to the right and a wave washed up over the deck. Mary lost her footing and got swept up in it, screaming as it took her over the edge of the ship and down into the cold ocean.
